FDA Issues Massive Food Recall |

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration ordered the recall of a common flavor enhancer in packaged food products after tests indicated possible salmonella bacteria contamination.
Hydrolyzed vegetable protein is a common ingredient in sauces, soups, dips, dressings, luncheon meats, and other packaged foods. The recall only involves hydrolyzed vegetable protein manufactured by Best Food Flavors Inc. in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Nevertheless, the recall will cut across many brand names and product lines because of the ingredient's ubiquity. It highlights the importance of the food safety and traceability because one seemingly small ingredient permeates throughout the entire industrial food supply.
Thus far there have been no reports of illnesses according to the Centers for Disease Control. Typical symptoms of salmonella poisoning include diarrhea, cramps and fevers.
Officials from the FDA, CDC and U.S. Department of Agriculture are coordinating the widespread recall to minimize the potential reach of contaminated products. The recall involves all hydrolyzed vegetable protein powders and pastes manufactured after September 17, 2009.
