Looking for a refreshing, crisp and simple summer salad? Follow these tips.

1. Use more assertive olive oil for strong flavors and milder olive oil with delicately-flavored ingredients.

2. Dress the salad at the last minute to prevent soggy herbs and vegetables.

3. Marinate any cooked grains or vegetables to have the best flavors.

4. Top salads with chives, thyme or edible flowers after dressing the salad because the olive oil will overpower them.

5. Use sea salt for some texture and added flavor.

6. Fill the salad bowl halfway to leave room for tossing without losing any ingredients.
