A meta-analysis by Harvard researchers examining 13 previous walnut studies concludes walnut consumption can significantly reduce LDL cholesterol, or bad cholesterol.

The results, published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," follows the growing science supporting the consumption of nuts such as almonds and macadamias for cardiovascular benefits.

Though it is too early to conclude walnuts have significant cardiovascular or weight management benefits, high LDL cholesterol is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.
