Superfoods receive a lot of recognition for their nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants and minerals. Much of their hype centers around the promise of greater health and balanced nutrition.
Though some may doubt the their benefits, the usual suspects on superfood-lists can boast their natural, unprocessed state. Health magazine recently listed nine superfoods for women that usually receive less attention than broccoli, salmon or almonds.
1. Kiwifruit: Full of vitamin C.
2. Watermelon: Refreshing source of lycopene, which has cancer-fighting properties.
3. Raspberries: Like other berries, it has antioxidants and fiber.
4. Mushrooms: As a meaty savoriness along with broccoli-like phytochemicals.
5. Swiss Chard: Swap out spinach for the fiber as well as antioxidants in this bittersweet leafy vegetable.
6. Red Beans: Get a boost of protein along with satiating fiber and phytochemicals.
7. Sardines: Full of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) and also lower on the food chain, which makes it more sustainable.
8. Pumpkin Seeds: Has mood-enhancing tryptophan like dark chocolate.
